DaJuan Gordon Named WAC Player of the Week For Second Time

ARLINGTON – For the second time this season, UT Arlington's DaJuan Gordon has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday.

Gordon averaged a double-double over a pair of games last week with 18 points and 10.5 rebounds while also adding 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in leading the Mavericks to a 1-1 record.

Over the two contests, Gordon shot a gaudy 82.4% (14-17) from the floor, a perfect 2-2 from beyond the arc and seven of the 21 rebounds he corralled came on the offensive end.

The grad transfer began his week by collecting his WAC-leading 10th double-double of the season as he poured in a team-high 20 points and game-most 13 rebounds in a narrow 80-78 setback to Tarleton State on Thursday. Gordon had a chance to force overtime, but his final shot right before the buzzer didn't fall; it was only his second miss of the game as he went 7-9 from the floor, including 2-2 from 3-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line.

Two days later, Gordon closed in on another double-double with 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds in only 23 minutes in leading UTA to a wire-to-wire 89-70 win at UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday. The Chicago native went 7-8 from the floor, passed out four assists and recorded a pair of steals.

During the contest, the 6-5 guard eclipsed 700 career rebounds as he now has 705. Gordon also has more than 1,200 career points, putting him in rarified company in the league and nationally.

He has now reached double-figure points in 12-straight games, and he has six double-doubles in his past eight outings. His efforts have helped move UTA into sole possession of 4th place in the WAC standings and resume-seeding system at 8-7 after starting the league slate 1-3.

Gordon was also named WAC Player of the Week on Nov. 13. In total, it is now the fifth conference weekly honor for UTA this season as Phillip Russell was named WAC Newcomer of the Week twice (Dec. 18 and Feb. 5), and Shemar Wilson garnered WAC Player of the Week on Nov. 20.

UTA returns to the College Park Center for its final homestand – and two of its closing three home games of the year – beginning on Thursday, Feb. 22, when the Mavs welcome Southern Utah for a 7 p.m. tipoff. UTA will remain at home and host Utah Tech on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m.
