ARLINGTON – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team fell to the Boston College Eagles, 17-8. The Mavs were leading 8-7 heading into the top of the 8th, however a slew of UTA errors, and an explosion from the Eagles offense caused Boston College to plate 8 runs in the 8th, ultimately dooming the chances at a Maverick comeback.
It was a fast start for the Mavs, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning thanks to an RBI double from
Ryan Black, and a SAC fly from
Ryan Ellis.
After both offensives couldn't get anything rolling in the 2nd inning, Boston College plated 2 runs of their own in the top of the 3rd inning, tying the Mavs at 2-2. In the 4th, Boston College plated 3 more runs to jump out to a 5-2 lead.
In the 5th inning,
JD Moreno recorded a single, and
Tyce Armstrong followed up Moreno's single with a walk, a wild pitch put Moreno on 3rd with no outs. A double-play ball hit by
Jordan Medellin brought in Moreno from 3rd to inch closer, 5-3.
In the 6th inning, after a Boston College run that put the Eagles up 6-3, the Mavs offense exploded for a 5-run inning, all coming with 2 outs on the board. With two down, and
Parker Airhart and
Tate Bethel getting on base due to a walk,
Tyson Pointer hit a single to plate Airhart to chip away at the lead, 6-4.
JD Moreno cracked a double to bring in Pointer and Bethel to tie the Eagles at 6 a piece. Following right behind him was
Tyce Armstrong, who also roped a double, plating Moreno to take the helm, 7-6, the Mavs first lead since the 1st inning. In the next at bat, JoJo Medellin hit the Mavs third consecutive double on two outs to bring in Armstrong to increase the lead by 8-6.
Rolling to the 7th inning, Boston College was able to plate a run due to an RBI single being given up with two outs on the scoresheet, drawing the Mavs lead to just 8-7. Heading into the 8th inning, the Mavs were blasted by an explosive Boston College offensive outburst, which saw 9 runs scored. To start the scoring, a passed ball and an error on the same play caused the first two runs to plate, and a throwing error loaded the bases with just one out, which essentially knocked all of the Mavs momentum. The Mavs had no answers, as they brought in a trio of pitchers,
Garrett Gearner,
Collin Horton and
Jacob Hasty to try and tame the Eagles, however the offense was too much too handle for the Eagle offense.
PITCHING PROFILE
The Mavs brought out six pitchers on the day, with
Aaron Calhoun and
Caden Noah each playing the majority at 3.1 IP each. Calhoun was able to strike out two batters and allowed 3 earned runs. Noah also recorded two strikeouts and was responsible for 2 earned runs.
ON DECK
The Mavs will play in a midweek clash against former-WAC foes, Sam Houston, on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas.
