ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team fell to the Utah Tech Trailblazers in the series finale, 5-6 at Clay Gould Ballpark this Sunday.
The Trailblazers caught fire quick and scored 2 runs in the first two innings and took an early lead, 2-0.
It wasn't until the bottom of the 3rd inning that
Garrison Berkley started things offensively for the Mavericks with a single to center field.
After Utah Tech increased its lead to 3-0 in the top of the 4th inning, the Maverick offense exploded in the bottom of the 5th inning with 4 runs to take the lead.
To start off the inning,
Ryan Ellis roped a single to center field which then saw
Tate Bethel get on base due to a fielding error.
Tyson Pointer, the next batter, blasted a single through the left-field line which plated Ellis to score a run and sent Bethel to second.
Down 3-1, with runners on first and second and two outs on the board,
Cason Gregory loaded the bases after taking a walk and set up
JD Moreno, who came in as a pinch hitter, for a chance to take the lead. Moreno then blasted a single up the middle which would've plated two runs, however, his smart base running deked the Trailblazer defense into an intentional run down with him and caused a third runner to plate for the Mavs to take its first lead of the game, 4-3.
The Mavs plated another run in the bottom of the 8th inning to take a 2-run lead thanks to a
Tate Bethel that plated
Ryan Black and Moreno, who both got on base with a single of their own.
With a 5-3 lead heading into the top of the 9th, the Trailblazer offense reignited itself and plated 3 runs due to a home run that saw them take a one run, 6-5 lead. Up until that point, the Trailblazers had not recorded a hit since the 5th inning.
