RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team split its two games today against the California Baptist Lancers this Friday, winning 5-3 in the first game and losing 1-7 in the second game. The Mavs won on Thursday, making the teams total conference series wins to now 3 on the season.
GAME ONE FLOW
The Lancers struck first in the bottom of the 1st inning, taking a 1-0 lead, however the Mavs quickly struck back in the top of the 2nd to even the score 1-1 due to a
Parker Airhart groundout with the bases loaded and no outs.
The game was scoreless all the way until the bottom of the 7th, where CBU took a 2-1 lead. The Mavs, once again, punched right back in the top of the 8th when
Ryan Ellis hit an RBI single to left field to plate
Ryan Black to even up the score.
The Mavs took the lead in the top of the 9th after
Garrison Berkley scored Airhart on a sacrifice flyout, however the Lancers pushed the game into extra innings when they tied the game in the bottom of the 9th.
In the top of the 10th inning, with two outs on the board,
Tate Bethel and
JD Moreno recorded back-to-back singles which set up Airhart with a chance to take the lead. The native of Flower Mound, Texas did just that and hit an opposite field double down the right-field line to bring home both Bethel and Moreno.
The Mavs were able to win the game 5-3 in the teams first extra-innings game of the season.
GAME TWO FLOW
The Mavs got on the board first with a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning after
Tyce Armstrong recorded a sacrifice fly to bring home
Ryan Ellis, which was the only run of the game for the Mavericks.
CBU plated 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take control of the game, 5-1, and increased its lead to 7-1by the end of the 7th inning. The Lancers went on to win the game 7-1.
PITCHING PROFILE
Caylon Dygert, the starter in game one, had an excellent performance today throwing 7 full innings while only allowing 2 runs off of 6 hits. The Magnolia, Texas native allowed 0 walks and was able to strikeout 5 batters in the 26 he faced.
Joseph Steeber was credited with the win in game one with a 2-inning outing. The redshirt junior recorded the first win of Maverick career.
Nicholas Robb was credited with the save in game one after coming in for relief in the 10th inning. The freshman recorded 1 strikeout and also allowed 0 walks on the day.
Zach Norris got the start in game two of the doubleheader and was able to pitch 6 innings, recording 5 strikeouts and allowing 0 walks.
Throughout both games, the Mavericks pitching staff allowed 0 walks throughout 19 innings of play.

The Mavericks will host the TCU Horned Frogs at Clay Gould Ballpark on Tuesday, Apr. 2 at 6:00 p.m.
