EDINBURG, Texas– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (12-6, 2-2 WAC) evened their conference record with a 5-2 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley in their Saturday match at the Orville Cox Tennis Center in Edinburg, Texas.
The Mavericks were quick to take the doubles point, securing all three courts for the 1-0 lead before singles play.
Sarina Reinertsen and
Ana Paula Jimenez dominated in their Court 2 debut, playing a perfect set over Lea Karren and Valentina Urraco for the first win of the day. The pair improved their record as a team to 10-6 overall with the 6-0 win and 9-5 in dual match play.
The advantage was clinched on Court 1, where
Tara Gorinsek and
Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez secured their eighth win of the season. The duo allowed Isabelle Bahr and Marjorie Souza only two games before finishing off the set 6-2.
Court 3 followed with the final doubles victory, as
Bruna Casasampere and
Ioana Dumitrescu earned their first victory of the season as a pair over Yaiza Vasquez and Kristal Dule. The set came down to two games, but Casasampere and Dumitrescu prevailed as they closed out the match 6-4.
Singles followed in a similar manner, with the Mavericks earning wins on all but two Courts.
The Vaqueros earned a point on Court 3, where Manyoma-Velasquez had to retire due to injury against Bahr. Manyoma-Velasquez had won the first set 6-4 before she retired.
Dumitrescu responded and secured her second conference win on Court 6 as she took down Urraco in straight sets. In the first set, Dumitrescu dropped only two games before earning a 6-2 lead heading into the second set. Urraco only managed one more game in the second set as Dumitrescu closed out the match 6-3 to put the Mavs at 2-1.
The next win came from Court 2 as Reinertsen continued her impressive season with her tenth dual-match win. She took down Karren in straight sets to put her at 3-1 in conference play and 19-9 overall.
The first set came down to two games, but Reinertsen triumphed as she secured the 6-4 win. The next set followed in a similar manner, except Karren earned one less game as Reinertsen closed out the match 6-3.
Jimenez pulled off the clinch as she followed with another straight set win on Court 4. Vasquez battled hard against Jimenez to bring both sets within two games, but Jimenez managed to close out both 6-4 for the victory. She marked her seventh win of the spring and sits at 17-7 overall.
Court 1 allowed the Vaqueros their final point as Gorinsek was forced to retire due to injury. After a strong 6-1 win in the first set over Souza, she fell in a close 7-6 (3) battle in the second. Souza was up 2-0 in the third before Gorinsek retired.
Casasampere ended the day on a win as she secured the only three-set win for the Mavs on Court 5. She played a strong first set, dropping only three games to Dule before closing out 6-3. Dule made a push in the second set, responding by taking the second in a similar manner to even the score 6-3.
In the final set, Casasampere left little doubt as she finished off in a dominant fashion for the 6-2 win. She now sits at 3-1 in WAC play and 18-7 overall.
The Mavericks look to take on their next WAC opponent Utah Tech at the UTA Tennis Center on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
