Winnie Kipsang Wins WAC Indoor Freshman Of The Year

ARLINGTON – Freshman distance runner Winnie Kipsang has earned the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Freshman of the Year after an outstanding start to her college career in the orange and blue.

Kipsang has been one of the top distance runners for the UT Arlington women's track and field team during the 2024 indoor season. She holds a season-best 4:52.69 in the mile and a 2:06.99 in the 800-meters, both times coming at the Jarvis Scott Open. Her 800-meters time is the second fastest time in indoor school history while her indoor mile time is the fourth fastest in program history.

At the Indoor WAC Championships, Kipsang took first place in both the 800-meters (2:09.45) and the mile (4:54.17). She was also a part of the women's 4x400-meter relay team and helped them to a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:45.14.

Kipsang is the second Maverick to be named the Indoor WAC Freshman of the Year, joining Katelyn Hayward who took home the honors back in 2013, UTA's first stint in the WAC. This makes two Indoor WAC Freshman of the Year honors for the Mavericks in just their three seasons in the conference.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH
"Very excited for her," said head coach John Sauerhage. "She has been working very hard both in the classroom and practice. Outstanding."
