ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team opened up the start of conference play by defeating the Utah Tech Trailblazers by a final score of 4-3 at Clay Gould Ballpark this Friday.
The Mavericks opened the game hot thanks to a solo shot from
Ryan Black in the bottom of the 1st inning to take the early lead, 1-0.
After a quiet 2nd and 3rd inning from the Maverick offense, the team put the pedal to the metal and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the lead, 4-0. With two outs in play and runners on first and second,
Tyce Armstrong blasted a single down left-field line which plated
Ryan Black, who was on second, to score the first run of the 4th frame. In the next at bat,
Garrison Berkley popped a ball up in the wind that was able to get down in play and was able to snag his ninth and tenth RBI of the year to propel the Mavs to a 4-0 gap, its largest lead of the night. Berkley's 10 RBIs on the season are the most by a Maverick.
The Mavs were in a battle for the rest of the game with a feisty Trailblazer team that scored a run in the top of the 5th and two more runs in the 7th to draw just 1 run behind the Mavericks. However, the Mavs were able to hold on to the slim lead for the rest of the game for its first conference win of the season.
