ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team took the conference-play opening series against the Utah Tech Trailblazers by a final score of 5-3 at Clay Gould Ballpark this Saturday.
The Mavericks took an early lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to an onslaught of hits and clutch batting. Tate bethel opened the inning with a double to right center,
Cade Sumbler then roped a single to the right field line which put Bethel on 3rd.
Garrison Berkley hit a SAC groundout to plate Bethel to take an early 1-0 lead.
Cason Gregory roped another hit in the right-field line and advanced Sumbler all the way to third. A bunt laid down by
Jackson Hill that caused a fielding error, Sumbler was able to score a run which put the Mavs up 2-0.
The Mavs continued to roll in the bottom of the 4th inning, scoring 2 more runs due to a
Ryan Black triple which plated Berkley and Gregory to take a 4-0 lead. The Trailblazers took a run back in the top of the 5th to cut the lead to 4-1, however the Mavs punched right back with a run of its own thanks to a
Parker Airhart solo homerun to regain a 4-run lead.
The Mavs were able to hold off a late Trailblazer push that saw 2 runs get plated in the top of the 9th inning that cut the lead to 5-3.
Nicholas Robb came in for relief in a tough situation with one out and runners on first and second, however the freshman was able to come in and shutdown a Trailblazer comeback. Robb came in and was able to groundout his first batter faced to draw just 1 out away from his save, however a walk to the next batter caused the bases to be loaded. The freshman was able to strikeout the final batter in a astonishing fashion to propel the Mavs to its second straight win of the season, the first time all season the Mavs have been able to do so.
