ARLINGTON– In their tenth win of the spring season, the UT Arlington women's tennis team (10-4) took down No. 70 UTSA 4-0 at the UTA Tennis Center on Friday.
The doubles point came down to the wire, with the Mavs earning two out of three wins to secure the early singles advantage.
Tara Gorinsek and
Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez were the first pair off, evening their record with a win on Court 1. The set stayed close as UTSA's Fatima Gutierrez and Cassie McLay fought to keep the score within one game. Strong net play and serving from Gorinsek allowed the pair to push ahead at 3-3 before they won the set 6-3.
The Roadrunners evened the doubles score with a win on Court 3 over
Ana Paula Jimenez and
Sarina Reinertsen. Vittoria Baccino and Aleksandra Zlatarova earned an early break to gain the lead in the set. Jimenez and Reinertsen battled back and brought the score within one but could not overcome the Roadrunners in the final game, dropping the set 6-4.
The 1-0 lead came down to Court 2, where
Bruna Casasampere and
Francisca Vergara were battling against Magda Tuells and Ekua Youri. The Mavs were quick to gain a 2-0 lead early in the set, but Tuells and Youri closed the gap to bring the score within one. At 5-4, the Roadrunners forced a no-ad point, but Casasampere was quick to put a volley away and close out the match 6-4 in the pair's ninth win of the spring.
After a brief rain delay, the Mavericks built on their doubles momentum in singles play and finished off the match without dropping a point to the Roadrunners.
In her eighth consecutive win, Manyoma-Velasquez started off singles play with a strong straight-set win on Court 3 over Baccino. The first set stayed close, as Manyoma-Velasquez carried a one-game lead throughout the set. At 5-4, she won the final game of the first set for a 6-4 win.
Manyoma-Velasquez strengthened in the second set as she closed out her match to give the Mavs 2-0. She allowed Baccino only one game before earning six consecutive games to conclude her match 6-1.
Vergara was the next off as she earned the Mavs' second straight set win of the day on Court 5. In the first set against Youri, the score stayed close until 3-3, when Vergara was able to gain the one-game lead. She then proceeded to close out the set 6-3 before heading into the second set.
A 3-0 lead in the second set got Vergara off to a strong start, but Youri fought back to bring the score within one game. As the final set got close, Vergara earned the last two games at 4-4 for the 6-4 win and put the Mavs one match away from clinching.
All eyes were on Court 2 as Reinertsen was competing in her second three-set match of the week. Zlatarova played a strong first set, allowing Reinertsen only one game before overpowering her 6-1. Reinertsen was not to be outdone, playing strong defense from the baseline to come back and take the second 6-3.
With the momentum on Reinertsen's side, she rolled through the deciding set to clinch the victory for the Mavs. Reinertsen was in control of the third set as she moved Zlatarova around the court to close out the match 6-0 and earn her seventh win of the spring.
Courts 1, 4 and 6 were still in progress when the match was decided. After dropping the first set, Gorinsek was in the middle of a comeback on Court 1 as she was at 6-6 in the second. Jimenez was down in the third set on Court 4, while Casasampere was up 4-2 in the second after winning the first set in a tiebreaker on Court 6.
The Mavericks' next matches will be the first of Western Athletic Conference play as they look to take on Abilene Christian (2 p.m.) on March 22 and Tarleton (11 a.m.) on March 24.
