ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball defeated the Grand Canyon Lopes in the second game of the series 12-4 to even the three-game set at one game apiece.
GAME FLOW
The Lopes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning but the Mavericks were quickly able to punch back with 2 runs in bottom of the inning.
Tyson Pointer got the scoring started with an RBI single that plated
JD Moreno to score the first run of the game and
Ryan Black advanced home after a wild pitch to plate the second run of the inning.
GCU took back the lead after a 2-run 2nd inning to jump out to a 3-2 lead, however the Mavs answered back in the bottom of the 4th with 2 runs of its own.
Tyce Armstrong and
Parker Airhart hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Pointer and Black to regain the lead at 4-3.
After the Lopes tied the game in the 4th inning at 4-4, the Mavs put its foot on the gas for the rest of the game and scored 8 runs throughout the next four innings. To start the onslaught, Airhart roped an RBI double to right field which plated Armstrong and
Ryan Ellis, who both reached on singles.
With a 6-4 lead heading into the 6th inning, the Mavs exploded for 4 runs in the bottom of the frame to jump out to a 10-4 lead. Black, Pointer and Ellis all reached base by battling for a walk with just one out in play and Armstrong brought in the first run on a fielder's choice. Airhart was able to score Ellis off of an RBI single to left-center field and
Garrison Berkley scored the final two runs on the inning with a double down the left-field line.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, with a 10-4 lead, Black plated
Cason Gregory on a sacrifice groundout and put the Mavericks up 7 runs. Berkley increased the lead to 12-4 in the bottom of the 8th inning on a sacrifice fly to solidify a Maverick victory.
PITCHING PROFILE
Caylon Dygert got the start for the Mavs and was credited with the win. The freshman from Magnolia, Texas pitched 7.0 innings and allowed 7 hits and sent 4 Lopes back to the dugout on strikes.
Cade McGlade came in for relief and pitched for the rest of the game and recorded 1 strikeout and allowed only 2 hits in the 9 batters he faced.

The Mavericks will play in the series finale against the Lopes tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
