HOUSTON – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team dropped the first game of the weekend series against the Houston Cougars 17-7 at the Don Sanders Field at the Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park this Friday.
GAME FLOW
The Cougars took control of the game early with 4-run first inning after the Mavs were unable to score in the top of the 1st inning after
Ryan Black and
Tyson Pointer got on base with a single and
Parker Airhart loaded the bases with a base on balls.
The Mavs got on the board after
JD Moreno brought home
Garrison Berkley with an RBI double to cut the Cougars lead to 4-1, however, Houston accumulated 4 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning to jump out to an 8-1 lead and increased its lead to 9-1 after scoring another run in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
Houston plated its 10th run of the game in the bottom of the 4th to take a 9-run lead but was quickly cut down to 8 after
Tyson Pointer plated
Cason Gregory with an RBI double for his second hit of the night. The Cougars plated another 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th to increase its lead to 12-2.
The Cougars increased its lead to 13-2 in the bottom of the 6th, but the Mavs answered back in the top of the 7th inning after
Ryan Ellis roped an RBI double to left-center field to plate Moreno and Black to chip away at the Cougar lead. Ellis was able to advance home after a throwing error from Houston to cut the deficit to 13-5.
The Mavs got the offense rolling in the top of the 8th inning after recording three-straight doubles to score 2 runs. Gregory started the streak off and was brought home by Moreno, who was then brought home by Black to decrease the Cougars lead to 13-7. The Cougars plated 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th to jump out to a 17-7 lead, which is where the game stayed until the final.
PITCHING PROFILE
Zach Norris got his 11th start of the season and rang up a batter on strikes throughout his 2.0 innings pitched.
Collin Horton came is as relief to start the 3rd inning and was able to strike out 3 Cougars throughout his 3.0 innings of work. The transfer from New Orleans faced 15 batters and allowed no walks and 6 hits.
Sam Collins came in for relief in the 6th inning and was able to strikeout 2 out of the 11 batters he faced in his 2.0 innings of work. The Azle, Texas native allowed no walks in his outing.
BOX SCORE NUGGETS
- Four Mavericks had multi-hit games in the loss today, with Cason Gregory, Tyson Pointer, Ryan Black and JD Moreno all snagging at least 2 hits in the game. Moreno was able to go 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.
- The Mavs pumped three straight doubles to start off the top of the 8th inning and scored 2 runs in the frame.
