Mavs Stall Cougars, Even Weekend Series

HOUSTON – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team defeated the Houston Cougars 7-3 in the second game of the non-conference weekend series at the Don Sanders Field at the Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park this Saturday.
 
GAME FLOW
The Cougars struck first with a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 1-0 lead, however the Mavs responded with a 2-run top of the 3rd inning after Tyson Pointer blasted a 450 foot 2-run homerun to take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Mavs kept its one-run lead until the bottom of the 5th when Houston piled in two runs with the bases loaded to take a 3-2 advantage.
 
In the top of the 7th inning, Tate Bethel led the inning off with a triple to left-center field and was brought home by Garrison Berkley, who smashed a 2-run homerun, to regain the lead at 4-3. After Cason Gregory and JD Moreno battled for back-to-back walks with nobody out, Ryan Black blasted a long double to center field and plated Gregory to increase the lead to 2. Tyson Pointer recorded a SAC FLY and plated Moreno and right after that Ryan Ellis roped an RBI single that plated Black for the Mavs 5th run of the inning to take a 7-3 lead in the top of the 7th.
 
The Mavs, behind its defense, were able to hold the Cougars to no runs and just one hit through the final three frames to win the second game of the series, 7-3.
 
PITCHING PROFILE
 
Caylon Dygert, the freshman from Magnolia, Texas, got his 11th start of the season and pitched for 5.0 innings and was able to manage 4 strikeouts. Dygert was able to hold the Cougars to just 7 hits in the 24 batters he faced.
 
Jacob Hasty came in for relief for his team-leading 18th appearance of the season, and dominated in his 4.0 innings pitched allowing no runs and just 1 hit. The Senior from Keller, Texas was credited with his 2nd win of the season to bolster his record to 2-1 on the season.
 
 
BOX SCORE NUGGETS
  • Tate Bethel recorded his first triple of the season and just the 4th triple all season for the Mavs. Bethel also put together a multi-hit game on the evening with a 2-for-4 outing.
  • Ryan Black went 3-for-5 tonight with an RBI double.
  • This was the 18th time the Mavs put up double-digit hits with 10 in the game. The Mavs are now 13-5 in games when the squad puts up 10 or more hits. This was also the 6th time this season the Mavs strung together double-digit hits in back-to-back games.
 
ON DECK
The Mavs will face off against Houston in the series finale of the non-conference weekend series tomorrow, Apr. 28, at 1:00 pm at the Don Sanders Field.
