PHOENIX, Ariz. – The UT Arlington softball team battled the whole way on Saturday as the Mavericks' bats ultimately fell short in the final game of the three-game series against Grand Canyon with a final score of 6-3.
Unfortunately, UTA suffered a series sweep to the Lopes as the Mavs now move on to an overall record of 14-24 and 5-6 in WAC play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: at Grand Canyon (L, 6-3)
Sophomore
Marley Neises led the Mavericks' offense with a multi-hit performance, going 2-4 at the plate. UTA totaled seven hits on the day – most of the three-game series.
Camille Corona (1-3, 1 RBI),
Jade Moreno (1-3),
Lindsey Franklin (1-1),
Valerie Ornelas (1-3, 1 RBI) and
Cameron Cooper (1-3) all contributed to the Mavericks' bats with one hit apiece.
Freshman
Abi Gutierrez earned her seventh start in the circle for UTA as the lefty went on to throw 3.1 innings of work, allowing five earned runs off five hits. However, junior
Jessica Adams came in and kept the Lopes' offense off balance as the right-hander faced just 10 batters with two strike outs.
The Mavericks' comeback fell short as the team dropped the final game of the series, giving Gutierrez the loss.
ON DECK
The Mavericks will pick conference play right back up with a doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 9 as the team will welcome Stephen F. Austin to Allan Saxe Field.
