SEATTLE – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team torched the Seattle U Redhawks in a 13-10 win in the series opener this Friday, at Bannerwood Park.
GAME FLOW
The Mavericks opened up hot in the series opener, scoring two runs in the top of the 1st. To lead the game off,
Tate Bethel roped a double to right center and advanced to third after a wild pitch. Bethel was brought home after
Ryan Ellis hit a SAC FLY, next,
Tyson Pointer hit a double to left center and advanced to third off of a wild pitch. In similar fashion to the first run,
Ryan Black scored Pointer with a SAC FLY to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks exploded for 6 runs in the top of the 2nd inning to take a 8-0 lead. First,
Jackson Hill started the inning off with a single, following him was a walk from
JD Moreno and
Cason Gregory loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch.
Tate Bethel brought home all three Mavericks with his second double of the day to score the first three runs. Next,
Ryan Ellis was walked, which put Bethel on second, both runners advanced a base after a wild pitch.
Ryan Black then smashed a three-run homerun to increase the lead to 8.
In the top of the 3rd inning,
Cason Gregory scored
Garrison Berkley with a bunt single down the left-field line to increase the Mavericks lead to 9-0. The Redhawks scored a few runs in the bottom of the 3rd to make it a 9-3 Maverick advantage.
After a scoreless 4th inning for the Mavericks, the Redhawks plated a run of its own and hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 5th to cut its deficit to 4 runs. In the top of the 7th,
Garrison Berkley increased the Mavericks lead to 10-5 after blasting a solo homerun to left field.
In the top of the 8th,
Ryan Black increased the lead to 12-5 after roping his third triple of the year and score
Ryan Ellis and
Tyson Pointer.
Jackson Hill picked up an RBI with a groundout that plated Black to jump out to a 13-5 lead. The Redhawks plated 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th to draw just three runs from the Mavericks. However, the Mavericks were able to hold on to win the series opener, 13-10.
PITCHING PROFILE
Caylon Dygert, the Freshman, was tasked as the starter in the series opener and performed well in his 6.0 innings of work. The Magnolia, Texas native nabbed 7 strikeouts and allowed just one walk in his start and was credited with the win, increasing his win totals on the season to 5.
Jacob Hasty came in as relief in the bottom of the 7th inning and pitched for 2.0 innings of work. The Keller, Texas native picked up a strikeout and allowed no walks.
Nicholas Robb came in for relief in the bottom of the 9th and went three up, three down with 2 strikeouts while picking up the save, his 3rd of the season.

- Tate Bethel had a solid performance in the win, slashing 2-for-4 with two doubles while picking up 3 RBIs.
- Ryan Black had 6 RBIs in the series opener by smashing a three-run homerun, picked up a SAC FLY and recorded a triple that brought home two runs.
- The Mavs plated 9 runs in the first 3 innings, the most runs scored by the Mavericks throughout three innings of play.
