OREM, Utah – Day two of the 2024 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships closed out with some podium finishes, points collected and finals qualifiers for the UT Arlington track and field teams.
The day kicked off with the completion of the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon which saw three Mavericks medal.
Jade Bontke claimed the bronze medal in the heptathlon, finishing with a score of 4802 points. With three events left on the day, Bontke would go on to place 5th in the long jump with a mark of 17-2.0 for 623 points, finish 6th in the javelin with a throw of 99-1.0 for 480 points, and finish 6th in the 800m run with a time of 2:32.05 for 662 points.
Luke Bontke took the silver medal while
Brady Shadrick won the bronze medal in the decathlon while
Levi Bontke would finish 5th overall. Luke would end up with a new outdoor personal best point total of 7064 while Shadrick would finish with 6967 total points and Levi with 6804 total points.
With five events left on day two of the decathlon, the trio of Mavs put in some work. Shadrick would go on to place 2nd in the discus after he threw it 126-11.5 to gain 638 points. In the pole vault, Luke would take the top spot with a vault of 15-5.0 while Shadrick would place 2nd with a mark of 14-9.25. Levi would go on to place 5th with a mark of 13-5.5. In the final event of the decathlon, the javelin, Shadrick would place 3rd after a throw of 176-5.25, Luke placed 4th with a throw of 172-10.5 and Levi would finish 6th after a throw of 166-0.5.
In the men's long jump,
Lucas Van Klaveren would go on to finish 5th after a leap of 23-9.0 and
Marvin Walford would place 7th overall after a leap of 23-3.5. Van Klaveren would gain four points for the men's team while Walford picked up an additional two points for the Mavs.
Desmond Fraizer made his presence known in the WAC in his first year with the Mavs after claiming the silver medal in the men's shot put with a throw of 56-9.0. It was his third best throw of the outdoor season.
On to the preliminary rounds to round out day two.
Zaire Moore moves on to the finals in the women's 100m hurdles after she finished 5th overall with a time of 13.90. It's her second fastest time of the outdoor season.
Van Klaveren qualified for the finals in the men's 110m hurdles, finishing 3rd overall with a time of 14.17.
In the women's 800m prelims, freshmen
Winnie Kipsang and
Emilia Mandl would both qualify for the finals. Kipsang took the top spot in her heat after she cranked up the intensity on the last lap when she was sitting in 3rd before surging to the front of the pack to finish with a time of 2:12.37 and the 4th fastest time overall. Mandl finished 2nd in her heat with a time of 2:13.04, the 5th fastest time among the field.
Jackson Cichon punched his ticket to the finals in the men's 800m prelims after taking the top spot of his heat. His time of 1:51.91 was the 2nd fastest time across the board.
Alexis Cain would go on to dominate her heat in the women's 400m dash prelims where she finished with a time of 54.24, the 2nd fastest time in the entire event.
In the men's 400m dash prelims,
Jarvis Miles made the cut for the finals after running a time of 47.54.
Madison Pippins and
Adeyemi Talabi both claimed their spots in the finals for the women's 100m dash. Pippins clocked in at 11.53, the 3rd fastest time among the field, while Talabi was right behind her with the 4th fastest time of 11.58.
The men's 100m dash prelims rounded out day two and saw
DaVontay Kennedy and
Khalid Mendez both punch their tickets to the finals tomorrow. Kennedy finished with a time of 10.49 while Mendez clocked in with a time of 10.54.
The men currently sit 5th overall while the women are currently in 6th place as we head into the final day of the WAC championships.
Day three will kick off at 2 p.m. central time with the women's 4x100m relay.
