ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team split the doubleheader against the Sacramento State Hornets this Friday, losing the first game 13-2 while evening the series at one game a piece in a 5-0 victory in the second game.
GAME ONE FLOW
The first game of the doubleheader started a 2 p.m. and was scoreless throughout the first two innings. Sacramento State struck first in the top of the 3rd with a run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets continued its roll in the top of the 4th inning by piling on 3 more runs to take a 4-run advantage. However the Mavs were able to chip away in the bottom of the frame after
Tyson Pointer plated
Ryan Black, who reached base with a walk, with a double to right field to cut the lead to 4-1.
The Mavs continued to chip away at the Hornets lead in the bottom of the 5th after
Jordan Medellin recorded an RBI groundout that plated
Tate Bethel, who reached on a walk and was advanced to after a Hornets error, to draw to a 2-run deficit.
In the top of the 6th, the Hornets scored 7 runs and increased its lead to11-2 and scored 2 more runs in the top of the 7th to put the game into run-rule effect, winning the first game 13-2 over the Mavericks.
PITCHING PROFILE
Caylon Dygert was tabbed as the starter for game one and pitched for 5.0 innings and was able to pick up 2 strikeouts and allowed no walks in the 28 batters he faced.
Collin Horton, who came in as relief, registered 2 strikeouts in his 1.1 innings pitched and allowed no walks in his outing.
GAME TWO FLOW
In game two, no runs were plated in the first three innings after a pitcher's duel between the teams. The Mavs were able to score a run in the bottom of the 4th to break the stalemate after
Parker Airhart plated
Tyson Pointer with an RBI single to left field to take a 1-0 lead.
The Mavs extended its lead to 2-0 after Pointer roped a single to the left field that plated
Garrison Berkley in the bottom of the 5th inning. The Mavs scored another run in the 6th inning to increase its lead to 3-0 after
Tyce Armstrong grounded into a double play with the bases loaded and no outs in play.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Mavs jumped out to a 4-run lead after
Ryan Ellis plated
JD Moreno with a SAC FLY to deep center field. The Mavs increased its lead to 5-0 after
Garrison Berkley roped an RBI double to left-center field to score
Tate Bethel.
The Mavericks were able to hold on to complete its first shutout of the season in a 5-0 win over the Hornets in game two.
PITCHING PROFILE
Zach Norris, a Senior from Paris, Texas, received the start for game two and dominated in his 7.0 innings pitched and racked up 7 strikeouts in his outing. Norris also allowed just 4 hits and no runs in his performance.
Nicholas Robb came in for relief in the top of the 8th inning and pitched for the rest of the game and picked up 2 strikeouts and allowed just 2 hits in his 2.0 innings pitched.
ON DECK
The Mavs will face off against Sacramento State in the final game of the series tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
