ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington has named Tania Schatow the eighth head coach in the UTA volleyball program's history. Schatow joins UT Arlington after spending last season as Pacific University's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
"I am beyond excited to be the next head coach at UT Arlington. I want to thank Jon Fagg for offering me this opportunity and all the amazing people I met on my interview. I can't wait to get in the gym with the team and get to work."
At Pacific, Schatow helped the Tigers to its fourth-straight berth in the NIVC tournament, boasting a 19-13 record. The Tigers were able to make it to the second round before being eliminated by Arizona. During the 2024 season, the Tigers were 4-1 over teams who participated in the 2023 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship defeating Yale, LMU, Sacramento State and College of Charleston.
"We are incredibly excited to welcome Tania to Arlington," Director of Athletics Jon Fagg said. "She separated herself from a very deep and talented candidate pool and I am confident she will be instrumental in continuing our program's strong momentum from this fall. Tania has a tireless work ethic and an incredible vision for UTA to recruit high-level student-athletes and develop them into terrific students and athletes. She has a championship pedigree and is highly respected by her peers and former student-athletes. I am looking forward to watching her succeed at a high-level here at UTA."
Before her lone season at Pacific, Schatow worked at Miami-Ohio as an assistant coach, working primarily as the recruiting and offensive coordinator from 2017-2023. While at Miami-Ohio, she helped guide the RedHawks to back-to-back MAC Championships in 2018 and 2019, resulting in two postseason appearances in the NIVC. The RedHawks boasted a consistently strong hitting percentage during her time, including a .238 hitting percentage in 2020. In her first two seasons, the team was averaging over two blocks per game.
"The volleyball program and its success were my initial draw to this university and I personally knew I wanted to be a part of it," Schatow said. "I loved learning about the support this program receives at matches and the atmosphere fans have created for this team. From the moment I stepped on campus I felt a warm welcome from everyone I met and the expectation to work hard. I was also blown away by all the fantastic facilities on campus. Overall, I am so appreciative and overwhelmed with gratitude to lead this program."
With a primary focus on middle blockers, Schatow was an integral part of the development of two All-Conference First Team members, including a Co-Female Athlete of the Year at Miami and a MAC Freshman of the Year. She developed her athletes into different systems while assisting in strengthening multiple aspects of the offensive strategy. In addition to her coaching duties, she worked in building the social media presence of the team.
Prior to Miami, Schatow returned to her alma mater LSU where she served as a volunteer assistant, learning the ins and outs of coaching at the Division 1 level. In her season with the Tigers in 2017, she worked primarily with the middle hitters, broadening their development in all facets of the game while crafting the team's blocking system. She also worked in organizing practice plans and helped scout opponents. During that year, LSU went 20-10 and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
Before LSU, she spent time overseas developing and the under-16 girls and under-16 boys teams in Belgium, getting her coaching start during her time there as a professional volleyball player.
After graduation, Schatow turned professional, playing in Europe for six years. She was a starting middle hitter on Oostende Volley in Belgium from 2013-17. In 2014, she was named Best Blocker in the league. She also had stints with Albi Volley in France (2012-13) and De Hann Volley in Belgium (2011-12).
Schatow is a 2011 graduate of Louisiana State University where she attained her bachelors degree in Kinesiology. She played all four years as a middle blocker on the indoor volleyball team. She made 4 NCAA tournament appearances in her tenure while garnering two SEC Academic Honor Roll recognitions. While at LSU, she was crowned a SEC Champion in 2009.
