Lady Mavs End Homestand With 20-Point Homecoming Win Over Tennessee State

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team got a 20-point homecoming victory over Tennessee State, 78-58, inside the College Park Center on Friday night behind a 28-point showing from the bench.
 
UTA ended their three-game homestand on a two-game winning streak and are now 14-2 in their last 16 games inside the CPC dating back to last season. The Lady Mavs also picked up their first ever win over the Lady Tigers in their first ever matchup.
 
The Lady Mavs had four players score in double figures, led by Nya Threatt, who had a career-high 21 points to go along with a season-high five assists and three steals. Kali Haizlip tacked on a career-high 16 points to go along with two steals off the bench and Mila Reynolds helped out with 13 points.
 
UTA's defense held Tennessee State to only 35.2 percent shooting from the field, including 23.1 percent from beyond the arc.
 
GAME FLOW
After falling behind 7-6, UTA went on an 8-0 run with 6:40 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Erin Sellers, to take a 14-7 lead. The Lady Mavs then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 22-12 advantage. UTA capitalized on nine Tennessee State turnovers in the period, turning them into nine points on the other end of the floor. The Lady Mavs would never relinquish the lead.
 
UTA kept it's foot on the gas in the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run starting at the 6:38 mark to increase its lead to 32-16. The Lady Mavs proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 39-20 advantage heading into halftime. UTA forced six Tennessee State turnovers in the period and turned them into six points.
 
The Lady Mavs continued to preserve their halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run to expand its lead further to 50-28 with 4:27 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Tigers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Mavs still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-41 edge. UTA's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 18 third quarter points.
 
TSU managed to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter, getting it down to a 13 point Lady Mavs lead before a UTA 12-5 run put the Lady Mavs back up by 20, 73-53.

The Lady Tigers would follow that with an and-one on the other end which was followed by a UTA 5-0 run to grow the lead to 78-56 with 15 seconds to go in the contest. The Lady Tigers would record one last basket before the Lady Mavs would go on to dribble it out and secure the 78-58 win. UTA fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.
 
GAME NOTES

  • The Lady Mavs shot well from three point range, knocking down seven of 16 (43.8-percent) long range attempts. This makes 17 three-pointers in their last two games after making five through their first two games.
  • The Lady Mavs held the Lady Tigers to only 35.2-percent shooting from the field, the third time this season the Lady Mavs have held opponents to under 40-percent shooting from the floor.
  • UTA never trailed after taking a 22-12 first quarter lead.
  • The Lady Mavs shared the ball well, recording an assist on 72-percent of made baskets.
  • The UTA bench came alive by scoring 28 points, just below their season average of 29.7 points per game.
  • UTA had a 34-32 edge on the boards in the win, the third time they've outrebounded opponents this season.
  • The Lady Mavs defense forced 23 turnovers, the second time this season they've forced opponents into 20-plus turnovers.
  • Jadyn Atchison finished with 10 points, rounding out the four Lady Mavs who scored in double figures.
  • UTA got six rebounds from both Miraya Perkins and Erin Sellers.
  • Threatt (21) and Haizlip (16) both posted career highs in points scored.
  • Threatt is the first Lady Mav to record 20 or more points in a game this season.

 

NEXT UP
The Lady Mavs will have a quick turnaround as they head down to Beaumont for a matchup with Lamar on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. CT inside the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center.
