Freshman Kira Reynolds Sweeps WAC Weekly Awards

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team swept the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) weekly awards for the first time this season by way of standout true freshman forward Kira Reynolds, who was named the league's Player of the Week as well as the Newcomer of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

This is the first weekly awards for the Lady Mavs as well as Reynolds this season.

Reynolds has made her presence for the Lady Mavs not only known throughout the league, but putting the whole nation on notice. She helped propel the Lady Mavs to a 2-1 record in the Hawaii North Shore Showcase where she averaged 13.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per contest.

Reynolds was instrumental in the win over SEC opponent Texas A&M, where she finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, her third double-double of the season, and hit one of the biggest shots in recent memory with a buzzer beater putback to give the Lady Mavs their first win over the Aggies since 1976. In the 61-60 victory over Texas A&M, she also chipped in with three blocks, two assists and one steal in a career-high 36 minutes of action. The 22 total points was also a career-high for the freshman.

In the win over VCU, Reynolds finished with eight points, six rebounds and four blocks in 21 minutes of play to help guide the Lady Mavs to the 61-39 victory over the Rams.

In the Lady Mavs lone loss in Hawaii, Reynolds finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, two assists and one steal in 30 minutes of action in the 71-60 loss to Colorado.

Through eight games, Reynolds leads the Lady Mavs in points and rebounds, averaging a near double-double with 11.9 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest. Her three double-doubles on the year have her tied for the top mark in the league as well as for 27th nationally.

When she gets to the free throw line, she's almost automatic as she's shooting 79.4-percent from the charity stripe, the third best mark in the conference.

Her 72 total rebounds are the most in the league and 42nd most in the country. She's third in the conference with 9.0 rebounds per game which also has her 60th in the country.

On the defensive side of the ball, she's a menace in blocking shots. Her 26 total blocks is the best mark in the WAC and is the third best mark in the NCAA. Her average of 3.25 blocks per game is also the best mark in the league while it has her ranked third in the nation.

She made a splash in her collegiate debut, garnering her first career double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. This is the best start to a career in program history in recent memory In just her third career game, she made her first career start and collected her second career double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go along with five blocks against the Cowgirls. In the win over Texas A&M, she collected her third career double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
