ARLINGTON, TX -- UT Arlington men's basketball saw six Mavericks reach double figures in points, but it was not enough in an 82-75 loss to Grand Canyon at home Saturday.
The Mavericks (12-14, 5-7) were led by Darius Burford, who had 14 points. Diante Smith added 12 points off the bench and Raysean Seamster helped out with 12 points and six rebounds.
UT Arlington pulled down 31 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Grand Canyon's 30, led by Lance Ware's career-high 16 boards. Ware also finished with 11 points, posting his ninth double-double of the season.
"I feel like we really came out and competed," head coach KT Turner said following the game. "For 36 minutes of the game, our guys did a lot of good stuff. But we gave up 52 points in the second half and I believe we gave up 16 points in the last three minutes and 40 seconds of the game and that's just unacceptable.
"They're a championship team though, they've been there, they know what to do and they turned it on in the last three-and-a-half minutes of the game and made plays when we didn't. I am really, really happy with how my guys competed and we're going to be right there at the end of the day. We keep getting better, we're playing in tight games and getting better from that. Teams aren't going to want to play us come conference tournament, I'll tell you that right now."
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-2, UT Arlington went on a 10-0 run with 15:57 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Brandyn Talbot, to take a 12-6 lead. The Mavericks led the majority of the half, and still entered halftime with a 31-30 advantage. UT Arlington did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 31 points inside.
UT Arlington kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Brody Robinson's three, to grow the lead to 64-57 with 6:34 to go in the contest. Grand Canyon then outscored the Mavericks 25-11 the rest of the way to close out the Mavs, 82-75.
