PHOENIX, Ariz. – The UT Arlington women's basketball team (14-9, 9-3 WAC) fell to the Grand Canyon Lopes (24-2, 11-0 WAC) in a marquee matchup between the Western Athletic Conference's top two teams by a final score of 82-69 despite Aspen Thornton dropping a game high 29 points inside the Global Credit Union Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Mavs were led by Thornton who notched a new Division I career high in points with those 29 while grabbing four rebounds, dishing out three assists and having three steals in a season high 36 minutes of action.
Avery Brittingham was the only other double-digit scorer for the Lady Mavs, finishing with 13 points while grabbing a team high six rebounds, dishing out four assists and having a block and four steals in 35 minutes. Koi Love, Taliyah Clark and Nya Threatt each recorded seven points apiece for the Lady Mavs.
The Lady Mavs defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 15 Grand Canyon turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Brittingham's four steals led the way individually for the Mavericks.
GAME FLOW
UTA started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Clark, to take an early lead with 8:54 left in the first quarter. The Lady Mavs then lost some of that lead but still entered the quarter break with a 22-18 advantage. UTA did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.
The Lady Mavs surrendered their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime with the score tied 38-38. UTA dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.
After halftime, GCU snatched a 53-47 lead before UTA answered back by going on a 6-0 run to tie things up at 53 with 2:37 to go in the third. The Mavericks could not advance their rally further as the Antelopes took a 58-57 lead into the fourth quarter. UT Arlington played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.
To start the fourth, GCU scored on a layup to go up by three. UTA would manage to tie it up shortly after and take a three-point lead with 6:30 left in regulation. The Lopes managed to tie it up at 66 apiece with 5:47 left and take a two-point lead with 5:13 left in the game, a lead they would never squander for the remainder of the game. UTA took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
