ARLINGTON, Texas –The UT Arlington women's basketball team picked up a historic 78-52 win over Incarnate Word in the opening round of the WNIT on Thursday night inside the College Park Center.
The Lady Mavs move on to the WNIT Second Round where they will face DFW foe, North Texas from Denton on Monday, March 24. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. inside The Super Pit.
With the win, UTA picked up their second postseason victory in program history and remain undefeated at home when hosting an WNIT game, holding strong at 2-0. It was just their sixth-ever game in the WNIT overall and first since 2019 and ninth-ever postseason game. The win moves the Lady Mavs postseason record to 2-7 all-time. The Lady Mavs home record for the 2024-25 season improves to 12-1, moving their already program best CPC winning percentage to .923 percent.
The Lady Mavs had three players score in double figures, led by Taliyah Clark, who had a game-high 22 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor and hitting four of her seven three-point attempts while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. She also finished with three rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes.
Avery Brittingham added 16 points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in a team-high 29 minutes. Miraya Perkins chipped in with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out an assist in 18 minutes off the bench.
UTA utilized fantastic ball movement in Thursday night's game, piling up 19 assists on 26 made field goals. Individually, Brittingham and Koi Love led the Lady Mavs with four assists apiece. It's the ninth highest total of assists the team has garnered in a game this season and the third time they've finished with 19.
The Lady Mavs defense held Incarnate Word to only 10 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 25.4 percent from the field.
GAME FLOW
The Lady Mavs dominated the flow of the game from the start despite losing the opening tip, recording the game's first bucket to take a quick 2-0 lead before UIW would tie it up at two apiece, the only time the Cardinals would tie the game as UTA would regain the lead and keep it all night. After jumping out to a 9-7 advantage, UTA went on a 10-0 run with 6:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Zoe Nelson, to increase its lead to 19-7. The Lady Mavs then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 24-9 advantage. UTA got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 24 total points.
UTA built that first quarter lead to 33-16 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 6:06 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kendal Robinson, to increase its lead to 42-16. The Cardinals cut into that lead, but the Lady Mavs still enjoyed a 47-22 advantage heading into halftime. UTA dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 23 points close to the basket.
After intermission, UTA added to its advantage and owned a 61-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Mavs played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
The Lady Mavs then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. UTA got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 10 of its 17 total points.
GAME NOTES
- The Lady Mav shot well from three-point range, knocking down six of 14 long range attempts. That marks the 14th time this season the Lady Mavs have hit five or more three-pointers in a game.
- The Lady Mavs held the Cardinals to only 25.4 percent shooting from the field, the second lowest shooting percentage the Lady Mavs have held an opponent to this season.
- UTA never trailed after taking a 24-9 first quarter lead.
- The Lady Mavs put on a passing clinic, recording an assist on 73 percent of made field goals.
- UTA had a stellar day defensively beyond the arc, holding UIW to 10 percent from three-point land on 20 attempts. This is the lowest three-point percentage the Lady Mavs have held an opponent to this season.
- The UTA bench came alive by scoring 27 points to its scoring output.
- UTA had a 46-38 edge on the boards in the win.
- The Lady Mavs were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying five blocks as a team, the 15th time this season they've tallied five or more blocks in a game.
- Seven different Lady Mavs scored in the first quarter while shooting 60-percent from the floor as a team.
- UTA moves to 4-1 all-time and 2-1 in the CPC against UIW.
