Mavs Drop Series Finale To Lancers

ARLINGTON, Texas --The UT Arlington Mavericks brought a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 6-3 to the Cal Baptist Lancers Sunday.

Senior Rhys Stevens (1-3) came out of the bullpen for UT Arlington (8-16, 2-4) and took the loss. Senior Joe Steeber was a bright spot for the Mavericks, starting the ballgame and throwing 7.2 innings, giving up two runs, all earned, on nine hits, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Offensively, the Mavericks were paced by junior Xavier Melendez, who went 1-for-5 on the day with an RBI. Senior Tyce Armstrong furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a double. Senior Parker Airhart also helped out for UT Arlington, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. UT Arlington scored twice, with one run coming across on Airhart's single.

After the Lancers rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the Mavericks came back to retake the lead in the seventh inning. UT Arlington scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Melendez, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Mavericks. The Mavericks were unable to hold the lead, as Cal Baptist scored four times over the remaining two innings to grab the 6-3 win.

» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed two runs across.
» Steeber put together 7.2 innings of two-run ball for UT Arlington.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 44 Cal Baptist hitters in the game, allowing 11 ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out four.
» Melendez led the Mavericks at the plate, going 1-for-5 with an RBI.
