ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington women's tennis team (6-7) defeated a tough Tarleton State (11-5) team 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center behind strong singles play.
 
The Mavericks dropped the doubles point but came roaring back to take four singles points and the match overall. The win ends the month of March on a winning note for UTA while moving their record for the month to 2-3 and snaps the Mavs two-match losing streak.
 
The Texans picked up the doubles point in convincing fashion, taking Courts 1 and 2 while Court 3 was gridlocked at 5-5 and went unfinished to give Tarleton the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
 
In Singles action, Ana Paula Jimenez took down Emma Persson 6-2, 6-2 on Court 1 to knot the score up at one apiece.
 
Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn took down Adeliya Mukhutdinova on Court 6 to give the Mavs the 2-1 edge. The two battled in an exciting game one that saw Araoz-Gosn take the tiebreaker 7-5 to claim set one. Set two saw Araoz-Gosn win the set 6-1 to claim the match.
 
The Texans would not go quietly though, as Maria Castano defeated Nika Novikova 6-4, 6-3 on Court 5 to knot things back up at two apiece.
 
The remaining three matches went all into the third set before a winner could be declared.
 
On Court 4, Ioana Dumitrescu dropped the first game 6-3 before she came roaring back to take game two 6-1 over Ximena Morales. In the decisive third set, Dumitrescu and Morales went to the tiebreaker which saw Dumitrescu win 7-5 to give the Mavs the 3-2 advantage.
 
Valeriia Ivanovskaia secured the victory for the Mavs on Court 2, defeating Duru Kuscu 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to give the Mavs the 4-2 win and snap UTA's two-match skid. As Ivanovskaia clinched the match, she turned to her teammates with her arms wide open while they rushed to her and flooded her with congratulatory gestures.
 
UTA returns to action this upcoming Friday, April 4, when they travel down to San Antonio to take on the Roadrunners of UTSA. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. CT.
