UTA Splits DH With Utah Tech in WAC Opener

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team opened conference play with a doubleheader split against Utah Tech on Friday, Mar. 7 from Allan Saxe Field.

GAME 1 | Utah Tech 3, UT Arlington 1
Junior Elizabeth Baylor led the Mavericks as she went 2-3 with a double at the plate, but the Mavs still came up short on Friday, and suffered defeat at the hands of the Trailblazers by a final of 3-1.

Senior Emilie Hoelscher (3-3) started and took the loss in the circle for UTA (10-9, 0-1). The left-hander went 4.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 3-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. Sophomore Emma Lopez came across to score the lone run of the inning for UTA and get them on the board. The Mavericks were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the game.

GAME NOTES
» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the seventh, when it pushed one run across.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 29 Utah Tech hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out two.
» Baylor led the Mavericks at the plate, going 2-3 with a double.
» UTU was led offensively by junior LB Kahahawai-Kekona, who went 1-2 with a double and an RBI.
» Junior Sauren Garton led the Trailblazers pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.

GAME 2 | UT Arlington 11, Utah Tech 3
UTA took a 7-1 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to an 11-3 win over UTU.

Freshman Madi McDonnell (2-1) started in the circle and picked up the win for the Mavs (11-9, 1-1). The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the first inning. UTA's offense started clicking and put up seven runs, including a two-run double off the bat of junior Baylor.

The Trailblazers failed to push any runs across before the Mavericks offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. UTA pushed across a run on sophomore Mia McNulty's RBI-double, which brought the Mavericks lead to 8-1.

UTA kept Utah Tech without a run before expanding their lead to 9-1 the following inning. The Mavericks scored once on an RBI-single off the bat of freshman Talia Maldonado.

The Trailblazers fought back, closing the gap to 9-3 until UTA added some insurance in the fourth. Freshman Kynlee Bowlin crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Mavericks, bringing the score to 10-3 in favor of UTA.

The Mavericks held Utah Tech without a run before building on their lead to 11-3 in the sixth inning. Maldonado came across to score the lone run of the inning for the Mavs and get them on the board. The score remained 11-3 for the rest of the game, as the Mavericks coasted to the win.

GAME NOTES
» The Mavericks power output was led by McNulty, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed seven runs across.
» UT Arlington took a 7-1 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Mavericks out-hit the Trailblazers at a 9-7 clip.
