AZUSA, Calif. & WACO, Texas – The UT Arlington track and field teams pull double duty this weekend when a portion of the teams will compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific while the other portion of the teams will participate in the Michael Johnson Invite hosted by Baylor. The Mavericks compete from Thursday, April 17, through Saturday, April 19.
A total of five Mavs will make the trek out to California for the Bryan Clay Invitational. Mid-distance and distance runners
Kash Powell,
Alex Kalmar and
Patrick Estes will represent the Mavs on the men's side while
Matro Jepkemboi and
Winnie Kipsang represent UTA on the women's side.
The rest of the track and field teams will make the trip to Waco for the Michael Johnson Invite.
Kalmar and Powell hold the top two times in the Western Athletic Conference in the men's 800m with Kalmar sitting in the top spot with a time of 1:47.86 while Powell sits in second with a time of 1:48.70. Kalmar also holds the fifth fastest time in the 1500m in the conference with a time of 3:46.56.
Kipsang holds the top spot in the WAC for the women's 800m with a time of 2:05.16 which she ran at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Kipsang also holds the second fastest time in the conference for the women's 1500m with a time of 4:23.51. Jepkemboi holds the fourth fastest time in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:29.46.
The Mavs prepare for their second dual meet weekend of the outdoor season.
STORYLINES
- In the men's pole vault, Randon Gray sits in the top spot of the conference leaderboards with a vault of 5.33m. That mark also has him tied for the 26th best mark in the country.
- In the men's shot put, UTA holds two of the top three marks in the WAC. Desmond Frazier sits atop the standings with a mark of 17.77m while Hayden Wilson sits in third with a throw of 17.66m.
- Abigail Flores holds the top mark in the conference in the women's discus throw after she set the program record last week with a thorw of 50.97m which catapulted her into the top spot on the WAC leaderboards.
