Softball Suffers Consecutive Losses to Grand Canyon

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team's offense struggled as the Mavericks' suffered back-to-back losses to Grand Canyon on Friday from Allan Saxe Field.

GAME 1 | Grand Canyon 11, UT Arlington 3 (6 innings)

Sophomore Abi Gutierrez (4-3) got the ball to start for UT Arlington (22-17, 8-8) and took the loss.

Maldonado's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-3 day, and included two doubles and two RBI. Sophomore Vanessa Soza put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-1 with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 4-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. UT Arlington scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Maldonado.

The Mavericks deficit grew to 11-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the sixth inning. Sophomore Mia McNulty came across to score the lone run of the inning for UT Arlington, which tightened the Antelopes lead to 11-3. The Mavericks were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME NOTES

» UT Arlington's power output was led by Maldonado, who picked up two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed two runs across.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 36 Grand Canyon hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out two.
» Maldonado led the Mavericks at the plate, going 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
» Grand Canyon was led offensively by freshman Jada Cooper, who went 2-2 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
» Junior Taryn Batterton led the Antelopes pitching staff, throwing 3.1 innings of two-run ball.

GAME 2 | Grand Canyon 10, UT Arlington 1 (6 innings)

Senior Emilie Hoelscher (7-5) got the ball to start for UT Arlington (22-18, 8-9) and took the loss.

Offensively, the Mavericks were paced by McClarity, who went 1-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 5-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. McClarity put UT Arlington on the board with a two-out solo home run off senior Meghan Golden. The Mavericks were unable to get any closer, as Grand Canyon added five runs to their tally on the way to a 10-1 final.

GAME NOTES

» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed one run across.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 31 Grand Canyon hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and eight fly balls.
» McClarity led the Mavericks at the plate, going 1-3 with a home run and an RBI.
» Grand Canyon was led offensively by freshman Jada Cooper, who went 1-2 with a home run and an RBI.
» Golden led the Antelopes pitching staff, throwing five innings of one-run ball.
