ST. GEORGE, Utah --UT Arlington received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Mavericks put 11 runs on the board and knock off the Utah Tech Trailblazers 11-1 Friday.
Sophomore Caylon Dygert (6-3) got the win for UT Arlington (18-27, 10-9). The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. Sophomore Kyle Winkler also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. UT Arlington got an RBI single from junior Jake Martinez, scoring sophomore Xander McAfee from second base.
The Mavericks then held the Trailblazers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. UT Arlington scored twice on junior Xavier Melendez's two-run homer, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Mavericks.
Utah Tech narrowed UT Arlington's lead to 3-1 before the Mavericks stretched the advantage to 5-1 in the seventh inning. The Mavericks scored twice, with one run coming across on McAfee's single.
UT Arlington held the Trailblazers scoreless before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Mavericks scored six runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of freshman Austin Phillips, bringing the score to 11-1 in favor of UT Arlington. The score remained 11-1 for the rest of the game, as the Mavericks coasted to the win.
