ARLINGTON, Texas – For the fourth time this season, UT Arlington freshman Kira Reynolds has been named the Western Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Reynolds continued her standout freshman campaign with another productive week, helping the Lady Mavs go 2-0 against Utah Valley and Utah Tech, averaging 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent from the field in a pair of conference contests. Against Utah Tech on Jan. 15, Reynolds recorded nine points and six rebounds, adding two blocks and two steals in 25 minutes of action. She followed with a strong all-around performance at Utah Valley on Jan. 17, finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds to secure her sixth double-double of the season, while also contributing four assists and one block.
"As the only freshman on the team, I really attribute a lot of my success this season to my teammates," Reynolds said. "They always make sure I'm good, but they also hold me accountable and challenge me to bring my best self every day."
Through 18 games, Reynolds is averaging 12.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game, shooting 48.0 percent from the floor. She has totaled 223 points, 150 rebounds, and 54 blocks on the season, while also adding 25 assists and 18 steals.
On the season, Reynolds continues to rank among the nation's elite defensively. She is currently tied for third in the nation in blocks per game, first in the WAC, and tied for fifth nationally with 54 total blocks through 18 games. Offensively, she ranks ninth in the WAC in scoring, while also sitting third in the conference in rebounding.
Reynolds' four WAC Newcomer of the Week honors are the most by any freshman in the league this season and further highlight her immediate impact in her first year with the Mavericks.
UT Arlington returns to action on Wednesday, January 21st, to face Tarleton State for a WAC matchup in Stephenville. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
