ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team's (6-9, 0-3 WAC) first half struggles put them into a hole to deep to climb out of against Southern Utah (10-4, 2-0 WAC), falling 58-55 to the Thunderbirds inside the College Park Center on Saturday afternoon.
The 26-point performance from the bench was not enough to overcome a slow start.
Kira Reynolds led the Lady Mavs with nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Laura Bello tacked on eight points and eight rebounds and Kali Haizlip chipped in as well with 10 points.
UTA shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 17 assists on 21 made field goals. Bello's three assists paced the Mavericks and Erin Sellers also chipped in with three assists of her own.
The UTA defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 20 Southern Utah turnovers. Those takeaways turned into eight points on the offensive end of the floor. Jeanne Rodriguez and Erin Sellers led the way for the Lady Mavs with three steals apiece.
GAME FLOW
UTA struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Mavs fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 29-22 by the time halftime rolled around.
Southern Utah continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 32-22 advantage before UTA went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kira Reynolds, to trim its deficit to 32-28 with 6:31 to go in the third. The Lady Mavs continued to reduce the Southern Utah lead, shrinking it to 44-43 by the end of the third quarter. UTA's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 10 of the team's 21 third-quarter points.
The Lady Mavs could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 58-55. UTA took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
