SAN ANTONIO, TX - The UT Arlington softball team dropped its second game of the day, falling 11-3 to New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon, after the Aggies used early power at the plate to build momentum.
New Mexico State struck first with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and never let up offensively in the early frames.
The Aggies added to their lead in the fourth with a three-run shot to deep left field, pushing the margin to 6-0. UTA answered in the bottom half of the fifth, beginning to chip away at the deficit. A single up the middle by
Kaylee Schweitzer brought home the Mavericks' first run of the afternoon by
Taylor Minor, cutting the lead to 6-2.
In the sixth, UTA continued to fight. An RBI groundout from
Kelsey Creech, plated
Valeria Feeney, to make it 7-3, as the Mavericks showed resilience despite the early hole.
In the top of the seventh, NM State took firm control of the game. Faith Aragon delivered a home run to deep center-left, driving in four runs and extending the Aggies' lead, 11-3, as they pulled away late and ultimately taking the game.
Despite the loss, UTA had key individual performances at the plate.
Valeria Feeney paced the Mavericks, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Schweitzer and Minor each crossed home once.
Kelsey Creech drove in a run, and the Mavericks turned two double plays defensively to limit further damage.
