LAS CRUCES, NM --The UT Arlington Mavericks broke through after an 11-11 tie in the fifth inning to take down the New Mexico State Aggies 20-12 Sunday.
Madi McDonnell (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for UTA (2-3). The sophomore right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits.
Offensively, the Mavericks were led by Mia McNulty, who went 2-for-4 on the day with two home runs, a walk and five RBIs. Peyton Holland compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Kailee Bautista also helped out for UTA putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning.
The Mavericks lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 8-3. The UTA offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Marley Neises, which brought the score to 9-8 in favor of the Mavericks.
UTA's lead had disappeared by the time the fifth inning came around and turned into an 11-9 New Mexico State advantage, when the Mavericks tied up the game at 11. The Mavericks picked up two runs in the frame, the important hit being an RBI double from .
The game stayed tied until the very next inning, when UTA got going again on offense. The Mavericks scored eight runs in the inning, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of McNulty, bringing the UT Arlington advantage to 19-11.
New Mexico State got within 19-12 until the Mavericks scored again in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 20-12. Dee McClarity came across to score the lone run of the inning for UT Arlington and get them on the board. The score remained 20-12 for the rest of the game, as the Mavericks coasted to the win.
