ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington completed a weekend sweep of Villanova with a 2–1 win on Sunday at Clay Gould Ballpark, riding a career outing from right-hander
Ty Zahradnik.
The Mavericks scratched across single runs in the second and fifth, taking a 1–0 lead on an RBI double from
Austin Phillips in the second before
Preston Knott scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the fifth. Villanova's lone run came in the fourth on an unearned tally after a throwing error and passed ball, but UTA's staff allowed just two hits on the afternoon and stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the ninth.
Zahradnik turned in a career performance, earning his first win of the season by working 8.1 innings and allowing just one unearned run on two hits with a career-high eight strikeouts and only two walks.
Hayes Melville came on with the tying and go-ahead runs aboard in the ninth and recorded the final two outs to lock down his second save and the 2–1 victory.
