ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington closed out its weekend series against ULM on Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark, falling 12-2 in the series finale. Despite the result, the Mavericks secured the series victory, winning two of the three games over the Warhawks.
The Mavericks collected eight hits in the contest and pushed across runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but ULM used a pair of big innings to build separation and claim the finale.
After three scoreless frames to begin the afternoon, ULM broke through with a five-run fourth inning to take the early lead. The Warhawks added another run in the fifth before UT Arlington answered in the bottom of the sixth.
Xander McAfee sparked the Mavericks rally with a single before moving into scoring position.
Hank Harp followed with a run-scoring double to left center, bringing home the first UT Arlington run of the afternoon.
UT Arlington added another run in the seventh inning when
Harold Laracuente doubled and later scored on an RBI double from
Xavier Melendez, trimming the deficit.
Laracuente finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Mavericks offense, while McAfee added two hits. Harp and Melendez each recorded RBI doubles as UT Arlington totaled eight hits in the contest.
ULM extended its lead late with a five-run eighth inning before adding a run in the ninth to seal the final margin.
Despite the loss in Sunday's finale, the Mavericks secured the series win at home, taking the first two games of the weekend matchup.
