ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team secured the conference series sweep over Southern Utah with an 8-7 walk off win victory in game three on Saturday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
The Mavericks improve to a 24-21 overall record and a 12-6 record in WAC play.
UTA was led at the plate by
Peyton Holland, who drove in a team-high of three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Utah struck first, plating the opening run after a hit-by-pitch on Kassidy Munoz, 1-0.
The Thunderbirds extended their lead in the third, scoring on a wild pitch, 2-0, before adding two more runs on a sacrifice fly and homer run to go up 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, Ollison later hit a two-RBI single through the right side of left field, while Becerra sent another one-run sacrifice fly to right field SUU increasing its lead 7-0.
UTA responded in the bottom of the fourth as
Peyton Holland launched a three-run home run to put the Mavericks on the board and cut the deficit to 3-7.
That home run marked Holland's 13
th of the season, tying the single-season program record.
In the fifth,
Talia Maldonado added a two-run homer to bring UTA within two, 5-7.
Kaitlyn Sailor continued the comeback effort in the sixth with a solo home run, making it a one-run game at 7-6.
With one final chance in the seventh,
Mia McNulty delivered in the clutch, blasting a two-run walk-off home run down the left line to complete the comeback and secure the 8-7 win.
NEXT UP
UTA will have a bye next weekend before heading to Stephenville for the WAC Tournament, hosted by Tarleton State, beginning Wednesday, May 9. The Mavericks now await its tournament seed.
