STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team fell to No. 6 Utah Tech, 7-4, in the first round of the WAC Softball Tournament at Tarleton Softball Complex in Stephenville, Texas.
The Mavericks dropped to a 24-22 overall record and a 12-7 record in conference play.
UTA was led at the plate by
Peyton Holland, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while
Mia McNulty added a two-RBI hit in the comeback effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Utah Tech struck first, plating the opening run on a single to left field that scored Kinley Pappas from second base for a 1-0 lead.
The Trailblazers added to their advantage in the top of the third as Pappas launched a two-run home run to left field, extending the lead to 3-0.
Utah Tech continued to build momentum in the fourth inning. Drew McKown scored on a throwing error to make it 4-0 before Pappas delivered an RBI single up the middle, bringing home Lauren Jones for a 5-0 edge. Summer Sanderson later doubled to left center, driving in both Pappas and Embrey to extend the Trailblazers' lead to 7-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, UTA got on the board as
Peyton Holland drew a bases-loaded walk on a 3-0 count, scoring
Kaylee Schweitzer and cutting the deficit to 7-1.
The Mavericks continued to fight in the sixth inning.
Valeria Feeney drew an RBI walk to bring home
Kaitlyn Sailor and make it 7-2. Later in the frame, Schweitzer and
Vanessa Soza crossed the plate on a two-RBI single from
Mia McNulty, trimming Utah Tech's lead to 7-4.
Utah Tech was able to hold the Mavericks off to take the game at 7-4.
NEXT UP
UTA will play in game five, tomorrow, Thursday, May 7 at 4 p.m. CT, against the losing team of game three between No. 1 California Baptist and No. 4 Utah Valley.
