Elizabeth Composto Schweitzer has served as the volunteer coach for the track and field teams since October of 2018 before being promoted to an assistant coach for the 2023-24 school year. Schweitzer is entering her third full year as an assistant and works exclusively with the men’s and women’s pole vaulters.
Schweitzer has guided Randon Gray to All-American honors and NCAA Championship appearances over the last few seasons. In the JD Martin Invitational, Gray turned in a 5.40m school record which also marked a personal record. At the time, his first place finish ranked in the top 25 of all Indoor Qualifiers for the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.Â
At the 2025 WAC Indoor Championships, Gray went back-to-back as the indoor pole vault champion with a vault of 5.27m to claim the gold.Â
In the men's pole vault at the 2025 WAC Outdoor Championships, Gray claimed the gold medal after a vault of 5.09m claiming the 2025 WAC Indoor and Outdoor Champion. Gray was the only competitor to reach a height of five plus meters. Freshman Ethan Saenz got his first taste of outdoor conference championship action and did not disappoint, taking home the bronze medal after a vault of 4.99m. Saenz reached the 4.99m mark on his last attempt at that height.
Out of eight UTA selections, Gray represented in pole vault at the 2025 NCAA West Preliminary Round in College Station where his quest to Eugene fell juts short, finishing tied for 15th in the men's pole vault, just shy of the qualifying top 12. Gray participated in the first of two flights and breezed through 5.02m and 5.17m heights, clearing them both on his first attempt.Â
Sophia Allen made a breakthrough this year. As a sophomore, she added 17cm (6.7 inches) to her PR, vaulting 3.83m during the 2025 indoor season. She finished her sophomore season 6th at the 2025 WAC Outdoor Conference.
In 2024, Randon Gray went to the NCAA final that year and earned 2nd team All-American while Scott Frazier attended NCAA Regionals in 2024. Also, the UTA Men’s Pole Vault squad was ranked #10 nationally on the USTFCCCA #EventSquad Rankings. Gray broke the UTA indoor school record with a vault of 5.37m, then topped it again in 2025 by clearing 5.40m. He won back-to-back WAC Indoor titles, placed 2nd at the 2024 Outdoor WAC and 1st at the 2025 Outdoor WAC. He advanced to the NCAA Finals in Eugene in 2024, where he earned 2nd Team All-American honors. He’s improved his personal best by 52cm (20.5 inches) since high school.
Frazier broke the 5-meter barrier with a PR of 5.16m, improving by 43cm (16.9 inches) over his UTA career and earning a trip to the NCAA West Regionals.Â
Â
In 2023, Coach Schweitzer led Simona Cabella to a bronze medal at the Outdoor WAC Championships with a personal best of 3.92m. On the men’s side, Randon Gray earned a bronze medal during the Indoor WAC Championships with a leap of 4.96m.Â
Â
In 2022, Abigail Kelly-Salo became the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Champion while Cabella earned the bronze medal at the SBC Outdoor Championships. Both Kelly-Salo and Cabella hold marks among the top-five best vaults in UTA women's history (3.93m and 3.92m, respectively).Â
Â
Also in 2022, decathlete Lucas Van Klaveren earned All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships placing 4th in the decathlon. Coach Schweitzer led Van Klaveren to a career best pole vault mark during the championships (4.81m). Van Klaveren went on to clear 5.00m during the 2023 indoor season. Out of high school, Lucas was a 4.40 pole vaulter – he’s improved his vault by 0.60m/2ft during his time UTA.
Â
Before her arrival at UTA, Schweitzer previously served as a volunteer assistant at the University of Chicago from 2016-18.Â
Â
She was a track and field student-athlete at North Central College, where she qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the pole vault eight times, between indoor and outdoor, from 2012-15. She was a five-time All-American in the event. Schweitzer graduated from North Central College with a degree in Graphic Arts and Interactive Technology, and currently works as an Experience Designer in Dallas.
