UTA MEN'S TENNIS TEAM HANDS COLUMBIA 5-2 LOSS

March 21, 2003

ARLINGTON, Texas ... The University of Texas at Arlington's David Corrie defeated Oscar Chow, the nation's 39th ranked singles player, in an exciting three-set match to put a cap on UTA's 5-2 victory over Columbia University Friday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington. The victory was Texas-Arlington's third straight and improved the Mavericks' record to 7-5 overall.

The team result had already been determined and every other singles match completed when Corrie was finally able to put Chow away to add an exclamation point to the Mavericks' win. Corrie won a close battle 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles slot. The win was the fourth singles victory for UTA on the afternoon. Nathan McGregor defeated Columbia's Alan Bohane 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 slot; Sandy Farquharson defeated Rohan Saikia 6-1, 6-3 in the fifth position and Ian Vazquez won a tough match in the sixth slot with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Columbia's Jimmy Moore.

Columbia picked up singles wins in the middle positions, as Yoku Kiuchi defeated UTA's Javier Carrillo 6-1, 6-3 in the third position and Rajeev Emany defeated Niels Buksik in the fourth spot after Buksik had to retire with a twisted ankle in the third set. Emany was leading 2-1 in the final set when the injury occurred. Emany had won the first set 7-6, before Buksik came back to win the second set 6-3.

UTA earned the doubles point with a sweep of the doubles matches. All three matches ended in an 8-5 UTA win. McGregor and Farquharson teamed to defeated Moore and Kiuchi in the No. 1 position, Corrie and Buksik defeated Chow and Mark Grae at No. 2 and Carrillo and Alon Goldshuv were able to get by Ricky Butenko and Scott Robbin in the third position.

The Mavericks return to action March 28 when they play matches against Texas-San Antonio and Oral Roberts on the same day.
