SAN ANTONIO, Texas...Roy Johnson scored a career high 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds as The University of Texas at Arlington defeated Texas-San Antonio 68-60 in a Southland Conference men's basketball game in San Antonio Saturday. The victory was UTA's second straight and the eighth in the past 10 games, and allowed the Mavs to tie a school record for SLC wins in a season.
UTA (14-12, 11-7) held UT-San Antonio (8-17, 5-13) to just 18 first half points, tied for the lowest point total by a Maverick opponenet in a half this season. Alabama State scored 18 points in the first half of UTA's second game this year. The Mavericks led UTSA 32-18 at halftime.
The Roadrunners pulled back into the game in the second half, as the SLC's leading scorer, Leroy Hurd, scored 18 of his 20 points in the game's final minutes. However, the Mavericks never relinquished the lead after going up 7-5 on Johnson's layup with 15:20 to play in the first half.
UTA used strong free throw shooting to earn the win, hitting 19 of 21 shots from the charity stripe. The Mavericks hit their first 16 free throw attempts.
Derrick Obasohan and Josh Daniel joined Johnson in double figures for the Mavericks. Obasohan scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Daniel scored 10 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out a game high seven assists.
UTA won its 11th conference game for the fifth time in school history. The last time UTA won that many conference games was two years ago.
