WICHITA, Kan.... Sandy Farquharson won both his singles and doubles matches for The University of Texas at Arlington's men's tennis team, but that was not enough as Wichita State defeated the Mavericks 4-3 in a non-conference match at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex in Wichita, Kan., Friday. The Mavericks dropped to 10-6 overall with the loss, while Wichita State improved to 8-9.
Farquharson, playing in the No. 6 singles position, defeated WSU's Juan Escalante 6-2, 6-2 after teaming with doubles partner Nathan McGregor to hand the Shockers' Marko Despot and Angelo Manns an 8-2 loss in the top doubles match.
UTA's other victories both came in singles play, where Niels Buksik defeated Despot 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3 and Javier Carrillo handed Carlo Contente a 6-3, 6-3 loss in the fourth slot.
The Mavericks return to action Saturday morning against Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
