ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington's women's tennis team won every match that was played on the court, losing only a singles match and a doubles match by forfeit after not having enough players to fill the lineup, as the Mavericks defeated Southwest Texas 6-1 in a Southland Conference match at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington Saturday. The victory means UTA will play Texas-San Antonio Sunday with a chance to share the SLC crown.
The Mavericks (11-7 overall, 8-1 Southland) played without filling out the spots at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles positions, just as they have all season. UTA has just five healthy players on its roster.
The Mavericks needed to win both doubles matches to earn the doubles point, and they were successful. For the second straight match, Ella Goldshuv and Jitka Vetrovcova played in the top position, defeating Southwest Texas' (8-9, 5-4) top tandem of Tina Klemenc and Melanie Hall 8-3. Meanwhile, former No. 1 team Annemarie Lenze and Anete Rozkalne defeated SWT's Leja Sirola and Margaret Potyrala 8-1.
With the doubles point in hand and having given up the point at No. 6 singles, UTA needed to win three of the five singles matches that were played. Again, UTA answered the challenge by winning every match the rest of the way.
Some matches were easier than others. Lenze and Goldshuv won easily in their matches, while Rozkalne, Vetrovcova and Gretel Hach were forced to work much harder for their victories. Lenze handed Klemenc a 6-2, 6-2 loss in the top position, while Goldshuv defeated Hall 6-1, 6-2 in the second position. Rozkalne was able to slip by Sirola 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 while Vetrovcova defeated Potyrala 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4. Finally, UTA's Gretel Hach was forced to come from behind and win a tiebreaker set over Regan Schneider 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 in the No. 5 position.
The Mavericks will play their SLC regular season finale Sunday at 11 a.m. at the UTA Tennis Center against Texas-San Antonio. A Maverick victory will earn UTA a share of the SLC regular season crown. The Roadrunners entered Saturday's match at Sam Houston State with an 8-0 conference record. UTA and Louisiana-Monroe, who defeated UTA on April 5, each have one SLC loss. UTSA defeated ULM earlier in the season. The Mavericks have won the past four SLC regular season championships.
