ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington's 74th ranked men's tennis team wrapped up its 2003 regular season with a 6-1 non-conference loss to No. 58 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington. The loss dropped the Mavericks' overall record to 10-10 on the season.

The Islanders took the lead by sweeping the doubles point, winning all three doubles matches 8-4. In singles action, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Oscar Roman defeated Alon Goldshuv 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 match to give TAMU-CC a 2-0 lead. Minutes later, the nation's 94th ranked singles player, Christoph Bergues of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, finished off UTA's Nathan McGregor in the top spot 6-4, 6-3. The Islanders than clinched the victory when Loren Collins handed the Mavericks' Niels Buksik a 6-0, 7-5 loss in the fourth position. After the Islanders clinched the match, two Mavericks who have been nursing injuries, retired in their matches. UTA's Javier Carrillo was down 6-5 to Goncalo Figueiredo in the first set when he retired in the No. 2 singles match, and Sandy Farquharson was trailing 4-1 in the third set of the No. 3 match when he retired. Farquharson and Luis Moris split the first two sets. Moris won the first set 6-1 before Farquharson rebounded to win the second set 6-3. The Mavericks' Ian Vazquez picked up his team's lone victory when he defeated David Plascencia 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in the match in the fifth position.

Texas-Arlington will now turn its attention to the Southland Conference Tournament, which the Mavericks will host at the UTA Tennis Center April 25-27. The Mavericks, who won the regular season championship with a perfect 5-0 record in league play, have an automatic berth in the conference semifinals on April 26.
