ARLINGTON, Texas... David Corrie and Sandy Farquharson each won two matches Saturday as The University of Texas at Arlington's men's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the Southland Conference Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Texas-Pan American in a semifinal match at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington. The victory improves UTA's overall record to 12-10 in 2003.
Texas-Arlington jumped out to an early lead by winning the doubles point, as the Mavericks' top team of Farquharson and Nathan McGregor outlasted UTPA's Tom Mangelschots and Filip Koziell 9-8, and UTA's Corrie and Niels Buksik defeated Jeremy Salvo and Oliver Steil 8-4 in the No. 2 position.
UTA won the first three singles matches that were completed to win the required four points. Corrie defeated Koziell 6-0,6-3 at the No. 2 position, Javier Carrillo handed Matt Gower a 6-0, 6-1 loss at No. 3, and Farquharson defeated Steil 6-4, 6-1.
The Mavericks, who won the regular season championship and own the tournament's top seed, will play the winner of the Texas-San Antonio vs. Southeastern Louisiana match in the championship match Sunday at 10 a.m. UTSA is the second seed, while SLU is seeded third. Admission is free.
