ARLINGTON, Texas...Freshman Jenna Fortune hit her third career homerun as the Lady Mavericks of The University of Texas at Arlington swept Centenary in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field. UTA defeated the Ladies 2-0 in the first game and 5-1 in the nightcap.
Texas-Arlington improved its record to 28-13 on the year, while Centenary fell to 18-24.
The Lady Mavericks got on the board early in the nightcap as they plated one unearned run in the home half of the first frame. After a lead off triple by freshman Falon Kwasnick, senior Melanie Williams reached on a fielding error by the Ladies third baseman, allowing Kwasnick to score and give UTA an early 1-0 advantage.
Senior Ali Lommel led off the bottom of the second frame with a double off the left center field wall. Two consecutive Centenary errors put runners on first and second for UTA and allowed Lommel to score and put the Lady Mavs up 2-0. Freshman Jenna Fortune plated one Lady Maverick runner with an RBI single to left to give UTA a 3-0 advantage.
Centenary plated one unearned run in the top of the sixth inning as designated player Janis Kelley reached on an error by Lommel which allowed Jordan Lansdale to score from third base and cut the Ladies deficit to two runs.
Jessica Carriger led off the bottom of the sixth frame with a double down the left field line. Carriger would score as Cathy Calvert reached on an error by the Ladies right fielder. A Kristen Blankenship sacrifice fly plated Calvert and gave UTA a 5-1 advantage.
Freshman Jill Garro earned the win for UTA, improving to 8-8 on the year. Garro struck out six and allowed only one hit in a complete game effort.
The Ladies starter Cheyenne Daries was tagged with the loss as she fell to 8-11 on the year.
UTA used a two-run fourth inning to edge past the Ladies in the first game of the afternoon. The Lady Mavericks got on the board first in the bottom of the frame when freshman Jenna Fortune hit her third career homerun over the right center field wall to put UTA ahead, 1-0. Junior Stephanie Owens singled up the middle and went to third as Crystal Krebs reached on a fielding error by the Ladies third baseman. Owens scored on the same play as the third baseman overthrew first base.
With the win, junior Katy Cox improved to 20-5 on the year. Cox struck out 10 and scattered three hits in seven innings of work.
Janis Kelley was tagged with the loss for the Ladies as her record dropped to 2-1 on the year.
The Lady Mavericks return to action this weekend as they play host to Lousiana-Monroe for a three-game Southland Conference series at Allan Saxe Field. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
