SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State junior guard Josh Naylor scored a game-high 25 points and made five of the Bobcats' nine 3-pointers in an 82-68 win over Texas-Arlington in Southland Conference play at Strahan Coliseum here Thursday night.
Texas State (8-6, 3-0) won for the seventh time in eight games. Texas-Arlington falls to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in SLC play.
Texas State broke open a close game with a four-point play after a foul and technical foul against UTA head coach Eddie McCarter. Four free throws - two by Roosevelt Brown and Awtwoine Blanchard - gave TSU a 59-52 lead with 7:54 to play.
Texas-Arlington was led by Derrick Obasohan (14), Keith Howell (13), Stephen Floyd (12) and Steven Thomas (11) all in double figures.
Naylor hit nine of 10 field goals, 5-of-6 3-pointers, for his 25 points. Roosevelt Brown poured in 14 and Terry Conerway added 12.
Texas State went on a 12-0 run in the final 2:33 of the game before a 3-pointer by Obasohan at the buzzer.
Texas State used three, 3-pointers in the final 2:29 of the first half to outscore the Mavericks 9-2 and take a 36-32 lead. With UTA lead 30-27 after a pair of Keith Howell free throws, Texas State's Roosevelt Brown canned a three and Josh Naylor hit another long jumper to give TSU a 33-30 lead with 2:02 to play. After a bucket by Beacham, TSU guard Terry Conerway made a 3-pointer for the four-point halftime lead.
UTA stayed close in the first half despite missing starters Donny Beacham and Thomas to injuries for more than five minutes of the half. Senior Roy Johnson came off the bench for a bucket, a rebound and key block in 12 minutes. Beacham missed eight minutes and Thomas for almost five. UTA stayed close without them in the lineup, trailing 20-18 with 8:58 to play in the half before they returned to the floor.
