NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin held Texas-Arlington to a season-low 44 points as they defeated the Mavericks 71-44 in a Southland Conference contest at William R. Johnson Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Stephen F. Austin improves to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in SLC play. UTA (7-9, 2-3) lost for the eighth time in nine tries on the road.
SFA was led by Antonio Burks with 21 points. Marcus Clark scored 13 and Jasen Gast added 11. For UTA, Steven Thomas was the only player in double figures with 11 points.
SFA put the game away early in the second half, outscoring UTA 21-8 in the first 10:00 to take a 58-31 lead after a 3-poointer by B.J. Banks with 11:08 to play.
The 44 points are the second fewest points in a game for the Mavericks who came into the game averaging 71.4 points per game. The all-time low is 43 points versus East Texas Baptist on Dec. 6, 1962 and against Northeastern Louisiana (now Louisiana-Monroe) on Feb. 27, 1997.
SFA's league-leading defense held UTA to one field goal the first 7:00 of the game to build a 20-4 lead after a pair of Gast free throws with 13:09 to play. The Mavericks made just one of its first nine field goals tries and committed seven turnovers while SFA made 7-of-10 from the field.
UTA cut the lead to 22-17 after two Jarrett Howell free throws with 6:59 to play in the first half. SFA answered with a jumper by Marcus Clark, a 3-pointer by Antonio Burks and another 3-pointer by Gast to lead 30-17 with 4:30 to play.
UTA returns to action Thursday when they host Nicholls State at 8 p.m.
