AUSTIN, Texas - The 13th-ranked University of Texas men's tennis team handed the Mavericks a season opening loss in Austin on Sunday afternoon. Texas-Arlington could only manage to claim one singles match in the outing, falling to the Longhorns 6-1.
Texas jumped to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Longhorn freshman Andy Mack and Garrett Snyder ran their doubles record on the year to 5-0 by defeating Josey Trimmier and Petri van Rensburg at the No. 3 position, 8-5.
Sandy Farquharson recorded the only victory for the Mavericks, defeating Pete Stroer at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 3-6 (13-11). At the No. 1 position, senior Nathan McGregor split sets with UT's Antonio Ruiz before falling in the super tie-breaker 10-4.
Texas-Arlington returns to action Jan. 30 when it travels to New York to participate in the Columbia Invitational.
