ARLINGTON, Texas - Louisiana-Monroe senior forward Larry Parker made an off balance shot with 0.9 seconds to play to give the Indians a come-from-behind 60-59 win over Texas-Arlington in the Southland Conference opener both teams at Texas Hall Thursday.
Trailing 58-57, UTA freshman Stephen Floyd (Missouri City, Texas) threw the ball into the hands of ULM's Aaron Branch with 19.9 seconds to play. After being fouled, Branch missed two free throws and Steven Thomas made a lay up with 7.1 seconds to play to take a 59-58 lead. But ULM came down quickly and Parker made an off balance shot in the lane for the game winner.
UTA (4-7, 0-1) drops its fifth straight game. Louisiana-Monroe improves to 5-10, 1-0.
Floyd had a team-high 15 points while Keith Howell (13), Derrick Obasohan (12) and Steven Thomas (10) all had double figures. John Andrews was the only ULM in double figures with a game-high 18 points.
Louisiana-Monroe trailed by as many as 13 in the second half, 39-26, after a pair of Howell free throws with 15:02 to play. The Indians went of a 10-2 run over the next 3:16 to cut the lead to 41-36 following a Wayne Bransom dunk.
UTA pushed the lead back to 10, 49-39, after a Thomas jumper with 8:27 to play, before ULM made their final push.
UTA began the game 2-of-12 from the field with seven turnovers in the first 9:36 and trailed 12-6 after a Mark Keith 3-pointer with 10:24 to play in the first half.
But the Mavericks went on a 7-0 run to end the first half. Trailing 22-17, Steven Thomas converted a lay up with 3:59 to play. Howell scored the next five points - a free throw and two lay ups off steals to take a 24-22 halftime lead.
UTA hosts Texas-San Antonio Saturday at 4 p.m. La.-Monroe will host Southeastern Louisiana Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
NOTES: UTA set a school record with no personal fouls in the first half.
