ARLINGTON, Texas - Junior outside hitter Ashley Van Antwerp used a career-best 24 kills to lead the Mavericks of Texas-Arlington to a five-game victory over preseason favorite Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference volleyball action here Friday evening. Game scores in the match were 33-31, 28-30, 30-28, 29-31, 15-9 as the Mavericks improve to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the league.
SFA falls to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in the SLC. Despite hitting just .188 to SFA's .200, the Mavericks prevailed in game one, 33-31. UTA held its largest lead of the game at 19-11 before the Ladyjacks climbed back to even the score at 29. Ashley Van Antwerp tallied seven kills in the game.
With the visitors leading 15-13 game two was delayed after the ceiling at Texas Hall began to leak due to the heavy storms in the area. When play resumed the Mavericks reclaimed the lead with a Morgan Rogers kill but SFA stormed back to claim a 30-28 win and even the match at one game apiece.
Senior Caley Smith paced the Mavericks in game three, hitting .444 with five kills in the Mavs come-from-behind 30-28 victory.
The Ladyjacks forced a deciding fifth game by claiming a 31-29 game four victory. Jami Hill led SFA in the game with seven kills.
UTA built an 11-2 lead to open the deciding game before the Ladyjacks used a 6-2 run to pull within five before the Mavericks closed the door, 15-9.
Van Antwerp set a new career mark for the second straight match with a match-high 24 kills. Joining her in double digits was Smith (17), Rogers (10) and Marek (10). Van Antwerp completed the double-double, leading the Mavs with 21 digs. Rogers followed with 20, Smith and Heather Dunn with 16 and Torie Dacus with 15. Dunn collected 57 assists in the match.
Texas-Arlington will return to action Tuesday when it travels to Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Huntsville.
