ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks volleyball squad regained a share of first place in the Southland Conference race with a three-game sweep (30-15, 30-22, 30-28) of Lamar University Saturday evening at Texas Hall. UTA improves to 20-4 overall and 12-3 in the league, knotted with rival Texas State for the top spot.
Lamar falls to 8-18 overall and owns a 1-15 mark in the league.
Ashley Van Antwerp paced the Mavericks in game one with six kills and no errors in 12 attempts as UTA took game one 30-15. Lamar hit just .089 in the game.
UTA used a balanced attack in game two with Torie Dacus leading the Mavs with four kills and a .500 attack percentage.
The Lady Cards stayed close in game three, pulling as close as one at 28-29 with a Nikki Perry kill. UTA closed out the match with a Melissa Marek kill to complete the season sweep of Lamar.
Van Antwerp paced the Mavericks offense with 14 kills while Marek chipped in 11. Leading the defensive charge was Dacus with 15, followed by Heather Dunn with 14 and Caley Smith with 12.
Texas-Arlington will continue SLC play Tuesday at Texas Hall when Sam Houston State visits for a 7 p.m. match.
